Geek For E!

Countdown to the Oscars – our picks for Art Direction and Cinematography

The 84th showing of the Academy Awards will air on ABC on Sunday the 26th of February and we at Geek for E have decided to join in on the fun and give you our predictions of who will win.

Today we go back to the “two for one” as we look at Art Direction and Cinematography.
And with that…the nominations go to…
ART DIRECTION …the nominations go to:
“The Artist”
“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two”
“Hugo”
“Midnight in Paris”
“War Horse”

Denise: If there’s an Academy god, Midnight in Paris will get this one.  Three distinct eras, and the detail in each one is amazing.  That’s work, people, and it should be recognized.  I wouldn’t hate it if War Horse’s beautiful, over-saturated colors and brilliantly fleshed-out WWI nabbed it, though I’m guessing that they’ll get theirs in Best Cinematography.

Rock: I agree with Denise again (on the ‘want to win’) but in this case, the Oscar will go to Hugo.  It was just too vivid to be ignored and some incredulous amount of hours had to be spent preparing this film.

Tatiana: I’m going to say Midnight in Paris in the hopes that said Academy deity DOES exist.

Alex: Four very good and very different movies to chose from, yet there can be only one.  And since the Academy says there can only be one, that one that I’m going to say wins is Midnight in Paris.
Score card…
Denise –  Midnight in Paris
Rock – Hugo
Tatiana –  Midnight in Paris
Alex –  Midnight in Paris

CINEMATOGRAPHY …the nominations go to:
“The Artist”
“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”
“Hugo”
“The Tree of Life”
“War Horse”

Denise:  Aaaaand here we go.  War Horse for the win.  Though the folks that love The Tree of Life’s wacky acid trip — dinosaurs!  lava!  Brad Pitt…? — could cause an upset here.

Rock:  War Horse, only because its Spielberg and he is a master of camera manipulation.

Alex: This will be a toss up on which legendary director/producer gets the win. Will it be Martin Scorsese for Hugo or Steven Spielberg for War Horse? So if I had to make a choice…and I do for the the basis of this article….I’ll pick War Horse.
Score card…
War Horse for all!
