Movie Review – Bullet to the Head

Stallone won’t go away…and that’s a good thing because Bullet to the Head is one of his best outings yet! Bullet delivers a combination of action and fun – and just like that time you put your peanut butter with my chocolate – it works. Based on Alexis Nolent’s French graphic novel Du Plomb Dans La Tete, Director Walter Hill manages to bring an interesting take on the “buddy” pictures we’ve seen before yet modernize it for today’s audience with characters and plot that make you feel invested till the end.

But you want to know what I liked about Bullet to the Head because, well, that’s why you’re here. So here you go…

Grade: B+

Director Walter Hill delivers a non-stop action movie that has shades of two of Stallone’s previous outings – Rambo and  Tango & Cash. Bullet is a character driven movie with a plot that doesn’t have many twists but still manages to grab you and keep you wanting to know what happens next.

James “Jimmy Bobo” Bonomo (Sylvester Stallone) is a hit man for hire who’s partner was just killed  after completing their latest job. He teams up with Detective Taylor Kwon (Fast Five’s Sung Kang) who has flown into town looking for the connection to the death of a corrupt Washington DC Detective who was last seen in New Orleans trying to sell off stolen documents regarding transactions related to real-estate mogle Robert Morel (The Bourne Identity’s Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje). Pairing “the good guy” with “the bad guy” isn’t anything new in movies, Stallone and Kang both bring the action and the funny and work nicely off of each other.

Bullet to the Head does a steller job modernizing the lead baddie. In the 80’s it was the drug lord. In the 90’s it was the weapon monger. In the early 2000’s it was the a combination of the two. And in 2013 it’s the money makers – those that can buy property low and sell high. Akinnuoye-Agbaje is that character and his actions are evil on a corporate level. He surrounded himself with his money manger Marcus Baptiste played by Christian Slater (‘member him??) and their thug-for-hire Keegan (Game of Throne’s Jason Momoa) who is the one that “gets his hands dirty”.

Let’s be real here, this is an “R” rated movie. There are double-taps to the head (thus the ‘bullet to the head’ in the title) and people get killed. There is blood, violence, adult language, and nudity. I would’t recommend taking your young children to this one…but if you want a guy’s night out, this is the movie for you. It’s also a great date night movie as the “comedy” of the movie balances nicely with the “action”.

Last thoughts – go see Bullet to the Head this weekend! You won’t be sorry.
