MOVIE SCREENING: Mortal Engines (TUE 12.11.18 @ 7PM, Cinemark Egyptian 24)

How much power does the human body generate?  Enough to run a massive city-size engine?  Probably not.  And good thing it doesn’t have to in this jaw-dropping sci-fi apocalyptic thriller.  From famed action and fantasy helmer Peter Jackson (King Kong), comes an imaginative future-world based on the real-life novella series.  Set in a future world where a cataclysmic event has limited the planets populations, a densely packed but massively mobile city known as London roams the Earth assimilating all it contacts – a young female fighter named Hester emerges and teamed with her newfound friends Tom & Anna, wage a war for the people.

Yeah baby! We need a strong sci-fi tale to usher us through the holiday season, and we want you at the Baltimore area screening with us.  How you say?  Check the details below the film highlights, and get posting!  #staygeeky

Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch (TUE 11.06.18 @ 7PM), Family 4-Pack Give-away

Loving you some Grinch? We’re kind of excited about Benedict Cumberbatch’s take on the wild, woolly, hater of all haters.  Cumberatch lends his voice to the infamous Grinch, who lives a solitary life inside a cave on Mt. Crumpet with only his loyal dog, Max, for company.  With a cave rigged with inventions and contraptions for his day-to-day needs, the Grinch only sees his neighbors in Who-ville when he runs out of food.

Each year at Christmas they disrupt his tranquil solitude with their increasingly bigger, brighter and louder celebrations.  When the Whos declare they are going to make Christmas three times bigger this year, the Grinch realizes there is only one way for him to gain some peace and quiet: he must steal Christmas.  To do so, he decides he will pose as Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, even going so far as to trap a lackadaisical misfit reindeer to pull his sleigh.

Meanwhile, down in Who-ville, Cindy-Lou Who—a young girl overflowing with holiday cheer—plots with her gang of friends to trap Santa Claus as he makes his Christmas Eve rounds so that she can thank him for help for her overworked single mother.  As Christmas approaches, however, her good-natured scheme threatens to collide with the Grinch’s more nefarious one.  Will Cindy-Lou achieve her goal of finally meeting Santa Claus?  Will the Grinch succeed in silencing the Whos’ holiday cheer once and for all? Check the contest details below the banner and find out with us! #staygeeky

TwitView: A Star Is Born (2018); in theaters FRI 10.05.18

TwiView: A Star Is Born (2018), Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook) stars and directs this immersive and beat banging remake.  From the start you’re treated to a barrage of original soul, blues, and rock music courtesy of co-star Lady Gaga (Machete) and Cooper, who each co-wrote the bulk of the films tracks.  This age old tale (redone for the 4th time?) follows an aging rocker, Jackson Maine (Cooper) who still has the fans and the sound, but is fading in a pop music world.  After accidentally discovering Ally (Gaga), they begin developing music and a relationship together.  No ‘rock love story’ ends happily ever after, and Jackson’s eventual descent into a booze and pill ridden lifestyle eventually takes its toll with he and Ally, his brother and manager (played so powerfully by the great Sam Elliott), and even on him.  If you’re a fan of blues-rock ‘ala’ Santana, Clapton or Page/Plant, the rock track ‘Black Eyes’ will slay you.  On the softer side is Cooper’s ‘Maybe It’s Time.’  This film will definitely garner some awards nominations; for Cooper it’ll be Oscar level for gaga it’ll be an MTV award.  The film runs a bit long at 138 minutes and you feel it in the 3rd act which seems to drag to its conclusion.  In the end, it’s a soulful and rocking good time watching these two blossom and the ultimate downer to see how their relationship falls apart.  B+

Bradley Cooper (Jackson Maine) and Lady Gaga (Ally) share a tender moment

TwitView: Crazy Rich Asians (In theaters now!)

TwitView: Crazy Rich Asians (in theaters WED 08.15.18) Loved it, Awkwafina, loved her! From the famed book comes the fun, catty and deliciously gaudy world of filthy rich Asians. Rachel meets Nick but she doesn’t know he’s heir to billions and is the most eligible bachelor in the Asian community. After coaxing her to visit his home and family in Singapore, she gets a crash course in real family, vile amounts of money, and a heaping of deceit. Along the way she has her best friend from college, Peik (Awkwafina) watching her back. The film runs a little long at 2 solid hours, but its good eye candy with its host of characters and pageantry. It’s insightful, infuriating, and satisfying – all while you learn a bit about Asian culture. It’s sweet, a great date movie and a Cinderella ending – what more could you ask at the multiplex? B+

Behind every tradition lies a revolution.  This Independence Day, witness the rise of our country’s 12 hours of annual lawlessness.  Welcome to the movement that began as a simple experiment: The First Purge.

To push the crime rate below one percent for the rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) test a sociological theory that vents aggression for one night in one isolated community.  But when the violence of oppressors meets the rage of the marginalized, the contagion will explode from the trial-city borders and spread across the nation.

Coming off the most successful film in the series, The Purge: Election Year, creator James DeMonaco (writer/director of The Purge, The Purge: Anarchy and The Purge: Election Year) returns alongside the producers of this worldwide phenomenon: Blumhouse Productions’ Jason Blum (Insidious series, Get Out, Split), Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Ouija series, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), and DeMonaco’s longtime production partner, Sébastien K. Lemercier (Assault on Precinct 13, Four Lovers)

TwitView: Avengers, Infinity War (in theaters now) B+

Avengers, Infinity War (in theaters this week!) No spoilers for the MCU faithful. I was pleasantly surprised the film could squeeze that many heroes into a storyline and still manage to give the viewer a sufficient helping of each including backstory. This has to be the most ambitious MCU film to date in terms of effects and sheer firepower on display. Josh Brolin (Thanos) is a great villain who is surprisingly not one-sided. Be prepared for an ‘Empire Strikes Back’ type ending where you are both elated at the possibilities for the storyline while simultaneously being a bit depressed. For the diehards, there is one post-credit sequence and it’s all the way at the end of the credits but it’s worth waiting for as it caps the film off and gives a great teaser to what’s coming next. B+ (Weekend Box office prediction: $265M domestic)

Spoiler Alert: Hulk doesn’t actually appear in this scene
